UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES TRY TO DESTROY THE NEST YOURSELF
Invasive alien species (IAS) are animals, plants, or other organisms that are introduced into places outside of their natural range, negatively impacting native biodiversity and in some cases ecosystem services or human well-being.
Vespa velutina is classed in the EU as an Invasive alien species (IAS) of Union concern because of its rapid spread thought member states. IAS are one of the biggest causes of biodiversity loss and species extinctions, and are also a global threat to food security and livelihoods.
The invasion curve shows that eradication of an invasive species becomes less likely and control costs increase as an invasive species spreads over time. Prevention is the most cost-effective solution, followed by eradication. If a species is not detected and removed early, intense and long-term control efforts will be unavoidable.
Preventing new nests from forming is the most effective way to protect ecosystems and apiaries. Our prevention programmes are designed to catch queens and primary nests early in the season.
Seasonal approach:
- Spring Monitoring: Early-season inspections to detect newly established nests and queen activity.
- Trap Deployment: Strategic placement of traps to capture gynes before they can establish colonies.
- Primary Nest Management: Identification and removal of small nests to prevent exponential growth of the population.
Programme Features:
- Guidance for property owners, municipalities, and commercial sites on preventive measures
- Ongoing support and consultation to optimize success across seasons
Benefits:
- Reduced risk of large-scale infestations
- Minimized threat to pollinators and honeybee populations
